My intent with this brief comment was to wonder.

In the early 50s, and even in the early 70s, America still had a more unified media, with a few, widely accepted, news channels for all of newspapers, radio and TV. Really, the basic coverage was Center-right, with a very clear establishment setting a moderate tone for what was basically still a center-right America. Although in the early 70s, the foundation was crumbling due to the 60s, and the war. The population was again dividing along the same lines we have today.

But if Wallace or McCarthy had access to a Fox News, or to a Twitter, and could have done a work around the regular press the way Trump has done, they may have found that the same audience was there. Certainly in the 50s, the fear of communism was at a much higher, and maybe more realistic level than the fear of Muslims or immigrants that Trump has stoked so successfully. How much of a following could they attract today?
