Of course, this is America. What you describe was helped by our now less-esteemed Supreme Court, first with Citizens United, and now with gutting the Voting Rights Act.

But, really, it has always been so.

However, the Dems, one level down, do have many people who want to keep democracy functioning, as well as do something for the people who do not give thousands or millions of dollars.

Also, while ther has always been lobbyists and corruption, the Republicans have decdied that they are willing to commit bigger crimes, much bigger crimes, to stay in power.
