One of the ironies is that Russia was complaining that it was being threatened by NATO. So, when NATO said they would not let them join, and therefore we will not fight for them, Putin figured that he could roll into Ukraine and no one would stop him.

What would he have done is NATO said yes to Ukraine? WWIII, or nothing? Who knows?
