To over-generalize, there are two basic methods of dealing with writing on Medium — write what you want to say, develop your own unique voice and hope it attracts readers. The second is to try to create what you think readers will want to read. Usually, people end up trying to balance those two.

I find that chasing readers is difficult, but I am of a different generation and can’t pretend to know what the hell TikTok is trying to tell me.

Two more things to add. 1. All of these social media sites are designed to be addictive. Those likes, claps, thumbs up, or rising numbers really keep you coming back. Be aware of how much time you are wasting just watching and following.

2. I have almost 1 K followers. Most of the time I don’t get 2% of them to read what I write. I don’t know if the rest of them are bots or have moved on to Clubhouse. It also seems as if there are more writers than readers on Medium. It does help to read other people’s stuff and see which ones you like and want to follow

Good luck with all this. Have fun!
